4 Ways to Set Yourself up For Success in Your Business Career

There’s nothing more satisfying than finding a job you enjoy. The path to get there may not always be easy but it can be incredibly rewarding. Here are just a few ways that you can work daily towards your career goals in business.

Goals in business - 4 Ways to Set Yourself up For Success in Your Business Career

Find a Good Role Model

The options for a role model are varied. It can be someone you know or an author that you really enjoy. Choose someone whose path inspires you. Set your own goals to match theirs. Of course, you won’t be able to mimic their entire career trajectory. Having a role model, however, gives you greater direction and vision of what you want to be. Knowing what your end goal looks like can make it a great deal easier to get there.

Network as Much as Possible

Very few people find jobs all on their own. Build a strong network so you have connections in multiple fields. Colleagues within your own organization may have contacts at HR departments elsewhere if you want to change jobs. Go big by networking with local executives. Many of them have homes in golfing communities. Practice your game so the meeting is a real hole in one.

Record Your Ideas

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Keep track of those “bolt from the blue” moments. You never know when they might become reality. Writing them down might even help take them from a vague idea into an actionable concept. Recording your innovations can also come in handy if you find yourself in a patent dispute or copyright issue.

Make a Plan

Create a detailed five-year plan for your career. Acknowledge the baby steps if you’re just starting out or making a sudden career change. You won’t become an executive overnight unless you’re extremely lucky. Research the common benchmarks that your colleagues followed to obtain their current position. Do they have certifications that are required for your field? Some careers need you to get an advanced degree. Decide if that is realistic for your current income or family situation. If it is unrealistic you might need to rethink your goals or adjust them slightly. Knowing your goals ahead of time, however, will at least help you make the choices you need to get you closer to your dream faster.

You have to get your foot in the door somehow. Don’t panic if it isn’t happening right away.  Find a good place to settle down with homes in golfing communities, keep track of your ideas, and figure out your plan going forward now so you can meet those business goals in the future. Be patient with yourself. It is said that if you get the job you want you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
