Biker memorabilia- Are you sitting on a fortune?

Biker memorabilia is unusual among all forms of collector materials. It’s all functional, and its values are more than dollar-based. People wore it, rode it, fussed and sweated over getting it to look good, and it means a lot to them. Some of the biker stuff you can find online was only parted with after death, that’s how important these things are to their owners. For collectors who know the story, it’s like car insurance; you don’t want to ever have to make a claim on it.

The range of biker memorabilia is huge. Practically anything anyone’s ever ridden or worn, or parts of them, is valuable on the collectors market. The good news is that the buyers are as keen as the owners.
To give an idea of what’s on the market, this is a very short list:
- Anything containing the words Harley Davidson
- Triumph bikes of a certain vintage
- Iron Cross helmets
- Color jackets (Almost impossible to get, and don’t wear them around real biker groups.)
- Original Indian bikes, or parts (These were the first American bikes to get actual fanaticism from riders.)
- Choppers from the 1960s, the real Easy Rider biker things
- Ducati bikes, particularly the older mid 20th century bikes
- Some of the better Japanese bikes, particularly older Yamahas, are very popular.
If you’ve got an old bike in particular, don’t think of it as junk. It’s not.
Put it this way, if it can be worn, ridden, or used for either purpose, someone will be interested. This is a global market. Car fanatics can’t even be considered enthusiastic, compared to bikers. In some cases there just aren’t even the remains of bikes, and the authentic original parts can’t be duplicated.
Bikes aren’t like cars. Cars are comparatively easy to restore, and you can usually get parts from wreckers. Bikes might get left in garages for decades long after the model is discontinued. They’re more like aircraft, where even the basic materials are hard to find, and missing parts of assembly leave people guessing how to even get started on restoration.

Note: If you’re looking for assembly information, don’t give up. Some old bikes, particularly engines, were made under patents, or other types of design. You might be able to find specifications from the Patent Office.
Biker gear
Biker leathers are also real collectibles, and they’re valuable to designers, as well as collectors. Some of the old leathers were great designs, and real achievements in leatherwork. You could literally hold a fashion parade of all the designs, and you’d also find some fantastic clothes. From the Wild One movie vintage onwards, when zippers were a fashion revolution, to the original heavy leather gear which fit like a second skin, these clothes are really something else.
One more thing for collectors- These collectibles are so valuable that they need insurance. While you’re getting your car insurance quote, check out home and contents, and keep your priceless collection secure. That’s how valuable these things are.
