WordPress Navigation Plugins – Here Are the Ones I Use

Many people find themselves totally overwhelmed by the variety of plugin possibilities that are available for WordPress. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the terminology, a plugin is simply an enhancement to the core functionality of, in this case, the WordPress blogging platform! I try to be very selective in terms of the ones I use, simply because you can actually spend an entire work week playing with the variety of ways to enhance WP, rather than getting work done, which we obviously do NOT want to do. Let’s take a look at a few simple and free ones you can install in your core WP CMS to provide better navigational structure and a more seamless surfing experience for your visitors. Ready? Great, read on!
While I’ve played with a lot of different ones, I’m going to tell you that for navigational purity, I love the Silo plugin for page hierarchy and information assimilation. Quite simply, what this free piece of code does is allow your pages to be nested in a very keyword specific fashion. You can take a broad or general Page topic and then next all of the “tier 2″ words and phrases that live within that main frame, underneath the parent phrase.
This allows you to quickly and efficiently create “silo” sorts of sites, which are well structured, highly focused, and invariably provide good navigational flow, and theoretically, will be better optimized for your marketing machinations, SEO, PPC and so much more.
Remember, playing with WordPress plugins is a lot of fun, most are free…but you need to spend MOST of your time working ON your business building efforts, not testing the software – trust me, I’ve watched entire months disappear just playing with the toys..:-)
